This week we begin what has become a Cascade tradition, publishing books. Each student will create a 12 page book that will be sent to a printer to be published as soft bound book.
In 8th grade the topic of their individual books are up to them. I want this to be something they enjoy and are proud of. Some students will choose to do a non fiction book based on a topic they feel an expertise in while others will do fictional short stories. The only restriction I place on content is that it must be original work and it must be school appropriate. (No sex, profanity, or violence) When they are done, they will have 12 pages worth of text and 12 pages worth of illustrations!
This week we will begin the key word outline for their paper. Next week will be the rough drafts while the week after will be the final draft. These books will be handwritten in italics and will require dress ups and sentence openers as well as liberal use of our vocabulary words.
Students will have 30 - 45 minutes a day to work in class on this project. My expectation is that they will finish in this time. As we get closer to books being due, they may need to do some of the final draft or illustrations at home. If this becomes necessary, I will adjust other homework to account for it. Because these have to be sent to a printer, they must be completed on time. I'm very excited to see what they come up with!
